Resilience and Recovery
At Heart Space, the work of our community team is often kept quiet, unseen, especially when working with more vulnerable groups of people. Recently, we were successful in funding our work with HMP Bella Unit and Tayside Drug and Alcohol services, where we run yoga classes, meditation sessions, and sound baths.
Rachel explains a bit about what she has been delivering below.
As Community Outreach Officer for Heart Space Yoga & Bodyworks, We have the privilege of bringing trauma-informed wellbeing sessions into communities across Tayside, working alongside schools, carers, community groups, healthcare services, and HMS Bella Unit. The purpose of this work is simple: to create spaces where people feel safe enough to pause, breathe, and reconnect with themselves, often at times when life feels uncertain or overwhelming.
Every session is guided by the principles of safety, choice, and compassion. There is no expectation to perform or participate in a particular way. Instead, participants are invited to engage in whatever feels right for them, recognising that every person's experiences and journey are unique.
One moment that continues to stay with me happened at HMS Bella Unit. I arrived expecting to prepare the room, only to find the women had already laid out the mats, blankets, and cushions. They had made the space their own. It wasn't simply that the room was readyβit was what that represented. The sessions had become something worth investing in, somewhere they felt a sense of ownership, safety, and belonging
They were choosing to make time and space for themselves. That quiet act said more than words ever could.
For me, that is what community outreach is truly about. It is not simply delivering yoga or wellbeing sessions; it is about creating opportunities for people to reconnect with themselves and with others. When people begin to feel that they deserve rest, that their wellbeing matters, and that they belong in these spaces, even the smallest moments can become the foundation for lasting change.
